ALEXANDRIA, Minn.---Playing in the final groups of the day, the University of Northwestern will maintain its place in Friday’s tee pairings at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men’s Golf Championship. The Eagles shot a league-best score of 310 in the first day of competition in the 54-hole event, 12 strokes ahead of second place College of St. Scholastica on a mild-weathered day at Alexandria Golf Club.

Northwestern’s Mac Saby was one of three golfers to shoot a clubhouse-leading 76 (+4). The University of Minnesota Morris’ Kyle Och and Martin Luther College’s Josh Hansen shared the best score in the first round, but a trio of golfers were just one stroke behind at 77. While no one carded a score better than 76, 10 individuals shot better than 80 – four of them were wearing a UNW shirt. In all, 45 student-athletes make up the nine-team field.

Crown College, Martin Luther, Minnesota Morris, Northland College, and Bethany Lutheran College are all within three strokes of one another to comprise the fourth through eighth place teams after Day 1. While North Central University is currently in ninth, the Rams’ highlight of the day came on the 160-yard par-three seventh hole, where freshman Ben Majerle scored a hole-in-one. The ace allowed Majerle to stay under 100 for the round as he came into the clubhouse with a 99.

Friday’s second round begins with 11 a.m. tee times on the first hole after Thursday featured the men teeing off on Hole No. 10. Since Alexandria Golf Club (par 72, 6,540 yards) is hosting both the UMAC Men’s and Women’s Championships at the same time, the two genders rotate starting holes (between Nos. 1 and 10) on each of the three days.
