ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week is a feature that takes place each week throughout the conference portion of the season with one contest being selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.
This week's Game of the Week will take place on Saturday, January 23th at 3 p.m. as Bethany Lutheran College travels to the University of Wisconsin-Superior in men's basketball action. With a five team UMAC tournament this year, the game this weekend could very well be a significant one for the two teams as they both enter the weekend holding a 4-4 UMAC record, and sharing the number five spot in conference standings.
About the Vikings:
The Bethany men’s basketball team enters Saturday’s contest with a 6-10 overall mark and 4-4 record in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play. Before playing UW-Superior on Saturday, the Vikings will take on St. Scholastica Friday night.
Junior Brandyn Frelix currently leads the Vikings on the offensive end of the court averaging 18.3 points per contest, fourth best across the entire conference. Sophomore Neil Eichten and senior Nick Sanborn are averaging 12.0 and 10.5 points per game to round out double-figures for the Vikings offensive attack.
Defensively for Bethany, sophomore Nate Chadderdon ranks second in the UMAC in rebounds per game. He averages a team best 9.4 rebounds in 14 games played.
About the Yellowjackets:
This is only the second time that the Yellowjackets have faced Bethany Lutheran since Paul Eberhardt became head coach. In the previous matchup on December 12, 2015 the Yellowjackets lost 92-80 in Mankato.
The Yellowjackets, have hit a bit of a rough patch, as they enter the weekend on a four-game losing streak, their longest of the season. Prior to recent struggles the Yellowjackets had been on two separate three-game winning streaks. The Yellowjackets have also cooled of slightly in conference play. After opening the season 4-1 in UMAC play, the Yellowjackets have dropped to the .500 mark.
Junior guard Zach Schradle has been anything but struggling, not just recently but throughout the season. Through 16 games Schradle has set new career highs in points, field goals made, field goals, attempted, 3-point field goals made, 3-point field goals attempted, blocks, and steals in a season. He is also on pace to set new career bests in field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, free throws made, free throws attempted, rebounds, and assists in a season.
Game Notes:
- UW-Superior's Schradle enters the weekend with seven double-double's on the season, including three in his last four games.
-BLC's Brandyn Frelix has scored 15 or more points in 10 games this season for Bethany.
- The Yellowjackets currently sit at fourth in the conference in field goal and 3-point field goal percentage at 44.8% and 35.3%, respectively.
- Bethany scored a season high of 92 points in the last matchup with the Yellowjackets.
-The Yellowjackets have a young team this year, as their starting lineup only has one senior, Brian Lindblom. Of the top nine players in terms of games played, only three are seniors.
