MINNEAPOLIS -- The Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus will once again play host to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women’s Tennis Championship this weekend. The four-team event will get underway Friday with both women’s semifinal matches scheduled for 8:30 p.m., following the men’s semifinal matches. The winners of Friday’s semifinal matches will advance to Saturday’s championship match scheduled for approximately 1:30 p.m.

The University of Northwestern enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after earning the 2015 regular season title outright for the first time in program history. The Eagles finished the UMAC regular season schedule a perfect 8-0 and will look to repeat as the postseason champions this weekend in Minneapolis. Northwestern boasts two-time UMAC Player of the Year Megan Johnson who has compiled a 18-7 overall record at No. 1 singles this season. Johnson has also combined with teammate Karen Moe for a 20-4 doubles record while Moe owns a No. 2 singles mark of 24-2.

In order to claim the postseason title the Eagles will have to get past the rest of the field that includes second-seeded College of St. Scholastica who finished the regular season 6-2, losing only to the top seeded Eagles. The Saints have won at least a share of the postseason tournament title 17 of the last 18 seasons and return three-time all UMAC selection Alexis Gunderson and two-time recipient Madeline Scanlan to the field in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions respectively.

Martin Luther College enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will be pitted against the Saints in one of Friday’s two semifinal matches while fourth-seeded Bethany Lutheran College will face the top-seeded Eagles on Friday evening.
Charis Goelzer has the best UMAC singles record for the Knights going 3-3 so far (the Knights still have one UMAC regular season contest to play before the UMAC Championship). Bethany Lutheran’s Rachel Rosemore has compiled a 5-9 singles record this season with four of those wins coming at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles position.

All UMAC Tournament matches will be played at the Baseline Center's indoor courts. Admission into the event is free, however fans may be charged to park their vehicle at one of the adjacent lots.
