Cougars Sweep UMAC Softball Player of the Week Awards
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jackson Gessell, Univeristy of Minnesota Morris
Gessell showed his power last week hitting four home runs and slugging .897 in six games. He finished the week hitting .414 with 12 hits and 12 RBI. He scored six runs and finished with six extra base hits.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Matthew Olson, Martin Luther College
Threw his second career shutout in a 17-0 win over North Central on Saturday. He struck out 10 and allowed only three hits in that game on the way to earning his first win of the season.
SOFTB ALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gina Downie, University of Minnesota Morris
Downie hit .500, had an on-base percentage of .545 and slugged .600. She had ten hits, nine RBI and eight runs scored. On Saturday she was 5-6 with six RBI in the double header.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Mariah Essig, University of Minnesota Morris
Essig picked up three wins for the Cougars last week in three starts and two complete games. She pitched 18.2 innings and did not allow an earned run striking out 14 and allowing just 14 hits.
MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ian Bird, North Central University
Ian helped NCU to their first win of the season over Martin Luther College last Thursday. He paired with his brother in a 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles and then claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win in the top singles spot to help the Rams win a tight 5-4 match with the Knights.
WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Karen Moe, University of Northwestern
Karen Moe didn't lose a match in bouts against Bethany Lutheran and UW-La Crosse last week. Moe has not lost a singles match to an NCAA Division III opponent in 2015, falling only to Olivet Nazarene's Viktoria Monakhova on March 13. The Eagles sophomore is 17-2 in singles play in 2014-2015 (the other loss came in the ITA regional tournament in September) and needs six more victories to break her own single-season wins record from 2014.
MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jeremy Peterson, College of St. Scholastica
Peterson broke the St. Scholastica record in the hammer throw with a toss of 57.68 m / 189' 3" at the Lee Krough Invitational hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. The throw won the event and currently ranks him seventh in NCAA Division III. Jeremy also placed second in the discus and shot put.
WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kari Marzinske, Bethany Lutheran College
Marzinske had a great showing at the Lee Krough Invitational establishing three program records. She broke the old long jump mark by over a foot and a half with a leap 15-feet, 8 1/4 to place third. The freshman also bested the high jump mark by two inches (4-feet, 11-inches) and the 100 meter hurdles mark by nearly a second (16.59).
