ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior continues to lead the team competition at the 2015 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women’s Golf Championship. The Yellowjackets, in their first year of competition as a varsity sport, submitted a group score of 400 on Friday, adding to their Thursday total of 380 for a two-day total of 780, 17 strokes ahead of second place Bethany Lutheran College.

Only the University of Minnesota Morris had a better day than Superior on the par 72, 5,800-yard course at Alexandria Golf Club. The Cougars’ Day 2 score of 396 was a 13-stroke improvement from Thursday’s initial round in the three-day event, putting Morris in third place at 805.

Crown College’s Chantelle McCarthy once again led the 40-woman field in terms of individual performances, carding an 86 for a two-day total of 169. McCarthy’s 25-over-par score is seven strokes better than second place Hailey Botten from Superior and nine ahead of third place Tera Weyer from North Central University. Weyer and Botten joined McCarthy as the only players to come into the clubhouse under 90 on Friday. Much like Thursday, 13 women carded scores of 99 or better on Friday.

Saturday’s tee times begin at 11 a.m., with the final threesome scheduled to go off Hole No. 10 at 12:52 p.m. The winner of the team event will not only go home with the UMAC Championship trophy, but also potentially the league’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas on May 10-13, 2016. The UMAC is making significant progress towards the prospect of awarding its first automatic qualifier in women’s golf this season.
