UMAC Men’s Golf Championship Day 2 Results
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – Crown College remains the frontrunner after two complete rounds in the three-day Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men’s Golf Championship at the Alexandria Golf Club. The Storm, the league finale’s reigning champion, shot a combined 310 on Friday to go with Thursday’s 296 for a two-day total of 606, 25 strokes ahead of Bethany Lutheran College and the University of Northwestern, who are tied for second at 631.
Crown’s Thomas Messner had the best individual round for the second consecutive day, carding a one over-par score of 73. Messner’s two day total of 144 is seven strokes better than his next closest opponent, Martin Luther College Josh Hansen, who has gone 76-75-151 in the last two days. Six individual competitors are within 10 strokes of Messner.
The University of Wisconsin-Superior made the best one-day improvement from Thursday, shedding eight strokes from 324 to 316. The Yellowjackets’ two day total of 640 has the UMAC’s newest member in fourth place entering Saturday’s final round. Northwestern went from 319 on Thursday to 312 on Friday to get into a tie for second place.
Friday’s weather improvement was welcomed, although the pin placements at Alexandria Golf Club were more difficult than 24 hours ago. Saturday’s final round promises the most difficult pin placements on the scenic par 72, 6,540-yard course with nearly perfect temperatures in the mid- to high-70s. Unless there is a change in team lineups on Saturday morning, each of the golfers from all nine schools will golf in the same threesome for the third round as they did for Friday.
Saturday’s tee times begin at 11 a.m., with the final threesome going off Hole No. 1 at 12:52 p.m. The winner will not only go home with the UMAC Championship trophy, but also the league’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament at Mendon Golf Club and Midvale Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. on May 12-13, 2016.
