UMAC Women’s Golf Championship Day 1 Results

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior entered the clubhouse as the Day 1 leader at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship. The Yellowjackets, who are sponsoring women’s golf as a varsity sport for the first time this year, posted an 18-hole team score of 380 with three of their individuals posting top seven numbers. Crown College’s Chantelle McCarthy is the individual front runner heading into Friday’s second round as the junior carded a UMAC-low 83 on Thursday.

12 of the 40 individual participants were under 100 as the field faced a steady 20 to 25 miles per hour wind with temperatures already barely hanging onto 50 degrees with overcast skies.

McCarthy’s lead currently stands at four strokes, with Superior’s Hailey Botten carding a 15-over-par score of 87. North Central University’s Tera Weyer is currently third after a Thursday round of 90.

In the team competition, Bethany Lutheran’s Day 1 team scorecard of 389 puts the Vikings within striking distance of the Yellowjackets as eight women’s teams vie for the UMAC Championship and potentially the opportunity to earn the league’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament, a feat that the conference is making progress towards. Both the University of Northwestern and College of St. Scholastica finished Thursday’s action with team scores of 404.

Friday’s conditions call for an improved forecast of a high of 60 with reduced winds at 5-10 mph. Saturday will feature a nearly 30-degree temperature swing for the three-day finale as the high is expected to be in the high 70s. Tee times for both Friday and Saturday are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with eight minutes separating each group until the last threesome tees off at 12:52 p.m.
