Game of the Week: Northwestern at Minnesota Morris - Women's Basketball
UMAC Game of the Week Archives
ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week is a feature that takes place each week throughout the conference portion of the season with one contest being selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.
This week's UMAC Game of the Week will take place on Saturday, January 31 as the University of Northwestern travels to the University of Minnesota Morris in women's basketball action. Satruday's game between the Eagles and the Cougars will be a re-match of the 2014 UMAC Women's Basketball Tournament Championship. Both teams head into the weekend owning perfect 5-0 UMAC records this season.
About the Cougars
For the second straight week Minnesota Morris will be playing in the UMAC Game of the Week. This week the Cougars take on Northwestern who headed into Friday, are 5-0 in conference games. Saturday’s matchup will conclude the first trip through the UMAC schedule. It will also be the last of four straight home games for UMM.
Since UMAC play has begun the Cougars have done a better job protecting the ball, knocking off three turnovers per game. Their defense has also picked up, forcing over 21.6 turnovers per game in the UMAC.
Minnesota Morris has found their stroke from behind the arc in conference play, hitting 42% of their shots and averaging 7.4 makes per game. Opponents are making just two three-point shots per game while shooting 10-67 from behind the arc. This should be an exciting game to watch with the number one three point shooting team in the league coming to town.
About the Eagles
Northwestern started this year’s conference play with a 5-0 record, a statistic the women’s team has not seen since the 2009-2010 season. The women had 26 turnovers in their last lost, so the Eagles must fight to limit those errors as they face Minnesota Morris.
Northwestern has shot .334 behind the arc this season and must capitalize on Saturday with their top three-point shooters Chanel Madson, Tiffany Stubbs, Kim Campbell, and Jessica Cole. Jacki Smith earned a triple-double last weekend, and is currently ranked seventh in NCAA Division III for blocks per game. Smith leads the UMAC with 4.2 bpg and will need to keep her streak going on Saturday.
The Eagles have not faced the Cougars yet this season, but ended last year’s season with a 71-33 victory of the Cougars in the UMAC Women's Basketball Tournament Championship, with Chanel Madson leading in points with 15.
