MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's track & field team needed all the points it could get going into the final two running events on Saturday and the Saints came through in the clutch, taking their third straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Outdoor Championship.
The Saints edged the University of Minnesota Morris by eight points (231-223), but trailed by 10 points going into the 5,000m run and 4x400m relay.
In the 5,000m run,
Chris Lawson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) took the title with a meet record time of 15:36.48.
Charlie Habermann (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) also broke the previous meet record by placing second with a time of 15:54.68.
Jacob Gallagher (Lisbon, N.D./Lisbon HS) was fifth in that event for the Saints.
In the final event, the 4x400m relay, the team of
Alex Horoshak (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS),
Luke McKenzie (Taylors Falls, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS),
Kelin Dunfee(St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central HS) and
Kevin Wagner (Cleveland, Minn./Cleveland HS) edged the Cougars by seven-tenths of a second with a time of 3:30.36 to seal the team title.
Jeremy Peterson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) took home three individual throwing titles on Saturday. He won the shot put with a program and meet record toss of 48'0" (14.63m). He also had a winning meet record toss in the discus with a mark of 148'11" (45.40m). His third title came in the hammer throw with a mark of 180'4" (54.98m).
Charlie Fernow (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) was second and
Ryan Murphy (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS) third in that event.
Josh Simmons (Houston, Texas/Jack Yates HS) won the 100m dash crown with a time of 11.11. Horoshak was conference champion in the long jump with a leap of 21'9.5" (6.64m).
Corey Anderson (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS) won the triple jump with a mark of 43'7.25" (13.29m).
Lawson, McKenzie and Dunfee took spots two through four in the 1,500m run. Lawson led the way with a time of 4:04.66. McKenzie was runner-up in the 800m run, finishing in 1:59.94.
The 4x800m relay team of
Ryan Soule (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS),
Mason Gracia (Houston, Texas/Prior Lake HS),
Jimmy Lovrien (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Tim Dunstan (Dollar Bay, Mich./Dollar Bay HS) was second, finishing in 8:51.53. The 4x100m relay team of Simmons, Horoshak, Tony Anselmo and
Mike Naumann (Poplar, Wis./Northwestern HS) also was second with a time of 44.42.
Naumann was runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.54.
Riley Niebuhr (Wells, Minn./United South Central HS (Minn.-Duluth)) was second in the javelin throw with a mark of 153'1" (46.66m).
Bethany Lutheran College was third with 56 points, while Martin Luther College and the University of Northwestern tied for fourth with 51 points.
Some members of the Saints team will be at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College (Ill.) on Thursday and Friday, while others will be at the Eagle Open, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday.
