ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week is a feature that takes place each week throughout the conference portion of the season with one contest being selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.
This week's UMAC Games of the Week will take place Friday, April 18 between the University of MInnesota Morris and Northland College. The Cougars currently own a 6-6 UMAC record while the LumberJills are 8-2 in conference play with one of their losses being in a previous game against the Cougars. Friday's games will be crucial as both teams will look to claim a spot in the top half of the UMAC standings.
About the Cougars
Minnesota Morris has a big week in front of them, facing the two top teams in the UMAC. After playing St. Scholastica on Thursday the Cougars will host Northland on Friday in the UMAC Games of the Week. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. at Cougar Field.
Currently Morris is 6-6 in the UMAC and in fifth place in the conference play, just one win out of fourth place. The Cougars have nine conference games remaining this season as they start a push toward a berth in the UMAC Tournament over the next two weeks of play.
About the LumberJills
Northland has a had a great start to the conference portion of the season and currently sits in second place in the UMAC standings with a 8-2 league record. The Jills will look to continue to build on that record throughout the home stretch of the conference portion of the season to earn a spot in the UMAC Postseason Tournament, after missing the four-team field last season.
Jayna Loy leads the LumberJills at the plate with a .477 batting average (third in the UMAC) and also has four home runs on the season. As a team the Jills lead the league in doubles with 47 this season.
Game Notes
-This will be just the second home doubleheader of the year for the Couagars, and the last scheduled one of the season.
- Northland has yet to play on their home field this season.
- Sam Hanson is leading the Cougars, hitting .470 on the year, which ranks in the top five in the league.
- Jayna Loy broke the Northland program record for doubles earlier this week.
-Loy also holds the all-time program record for homeruns.
- Opponents are out hitting the Cougars this season but Minnesota Morris has a better on-base percentage.
