Crown Earns First-Ever Trip to NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – Crown College was named the 2014 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men’s Golf Champion following Saturday’s third and final round of the 2014 event at Alexandria Golf Club in Alexandria, Minnesota. The Storm turned in a three-day score of 938 to claim the program’s first-ever berth to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship.

Crown finished 14 strokes ahead of second place Bethany Lutheran College, but it was the Vikings who turned in the low team score of the day by carding a 305. Bethany’s Kiley Miller posted the low 18-hole individual round of the day and the 2014 championship finishing with a 1 over par, 73 on Saturday.

The University of Minnesota Morris recorded their top team score of the three-day championship on the final day to finish in third place in the team standings while Martin Luther College finished 10 strokes behind in fourth place. Northland College, who followed Martin Luther in the final standings, compiled their best-ever team finish at a UMAC championship this year. The University of Northwestern and North Central University finished in sixth and seventh place respectively in the conference championship event.

In addition to winning the team trophy, Crown also earned individual medalist honors as Reed Sorensen was the individual champion after recording a final round of 75 to go along with rounds of 74 and 80 to finish with a three-day total of 229. Bethany Lutheran’s Jon Pederson followed Sorensen in the final leader board posting a three day, 54-hole score of 230.

The top eight individual finishers earned all-conference honors for their performance at the championship. A full listing of UMAC Men's Golf post-season awards will be available at www.umacathletics.com on Monday.

With their championship, Crown secures the UMAC's automatic qualifier to the 2015 NCAA Men's Golf Championship May 12 – 15 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
