ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The precipitation held off for Day 2 of the 2014 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship but strong winds made for a difficult day on the course at Alexandria Golf Club in Alexandria, Minnesota. Just two golfers in the field of thirty-five bettered their Day 1 18-hole score on the second day of competition.

Crown College once again turned in the top team score of the day posting a team score of 325 while building on their lead in the team standings to finish the second day of the three-day tournament 21 strokes ahead of second place Bethany Lutheran. Tom Messner posted in the low round of the day for the Storm shooting a 79 while Juan Marcos Cueva and Reed Sorensen both turned in 18-hole scores of 80. Sorensen currently sits first in the individual standings with a two-day score of 154.

Bethany Lutheran’s Jon Pederson carded the low individual round of the day finishing with a 77 which combined with yesterday’s score has him ranked second in the tournament’s individual standings. Pederson and Viking teammate Michael Schultz turned in the only two improved scores of the day.

The University of Minnesota Morris finished Day 2 in third place in the team standings after jumping Martin Luther College, who was in third place after the first day of competition, by turning in a team score of 344. John Geiger and Tyler Sachariason anchored the Cougars on the day. Geiger currently sits in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings while Sachariason’s front-nine score of 39 was the best of the day.

Sitting 10 strokes back from Minnesota Morris in the team standings is Martin Luther College. Erik Hansen once again posted the top score for the Knights turning in two birdies on the day to combine for a tournament-high six birdies.

Northland College remains fifth in the team standings and now sit seven strokes behind fourth place Martin Luther. Evan Lunda again led the LumberJacks carding a score of 82 which has him tied for sixth in the individual standings. Northland gained 14 strokes on sixth place University of Northwestern in Friday’s round.

For the second consecutive day Mac Saby was top individual performer for Northwestern who currently sits 10 strokes ahead of seventh place North Central University in the team rankings. Josh Hostetler and Nate Gerving shared the top scores for the Rams in challenging weather conditions on the second day of the event.

The final day of the UMAC Championship will start at 11 a.m. with the first of twelve tee times. The top eight individual finishers will receive all-conference recognition at the conclusion of tomorrow's final round with the top team securing the UMAC's automatic qualifier to the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship at May 12 – 15 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
