UMAC Game of the Week Archives
ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week is a feature that takes place each week throughout the conference portion of the season with one contest being selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.
This week's UMAC Game of the Week will take place on Friday, October 17 in St. Paul with Martin Luther College traveling to the University of Northwestern for UMAC women's soccer. The two teams are currently tied for fourth place in the UMAC and with the regular season winding down both will be hungry for a win with hopes of earning a spot in the four-team UMAC Tournament this season. Game time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
About the Knights
MLC comes into this weekend’s game looking to return to form after a pair of losses to conference co-leader Minnesota Morris last week.
The Knights have won three in a row against the Eagles, and sophomore forward Jenna Maurer has been a major reason for that success. Maurer has scored in all three games she has played against UNW, totaling six goals and 12 points. In the first meeting between the teams this season (4-2 MLC win on September 27), Maurer scored a career-best three goals to lead the winning effort.
After leaning on the offense to jump start the team last season, the Knights have relied on a strong defensive effort this season. MLC ranks third in the UMAC in goals allowed per game (1.34) during conference play. Senior keeper Keely Keese has a goals against average of 1.67 in her last three games against UNW, and currently ranks fourth in the conference in goals against average for the season (2.01) and in league play (1.45).
About the Eagles
Northwestern enters this weekend 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). UNW won both games last week including their homecoming game against North Central. The Eagles are currently tied for fourth in the UMAC.
Miranda Carda, who was named UMAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2014 on Tuesday, earned two shutouts in last weekend’s conference games. With Northwestern scheduled to play Martin Luther College and Minnesota Morris this weekend, the Eagles will play their final non-conference game at Bethel University on Tuesday before the remainder of the season continues with conference games. Sophomore Jordan Skarin comes into the weekend as the Eagles’ top scorer at eight goals, averaging 0.89 goals per game with 2.78 shots per game. Skarin scored her career-high of three goals in last Saturday’s game against North Central, including a hat trick in the second half.
Northwestern seeks to come back from their 4-2 loss to Martin Luther earlier this season. Skarin scored both Eagle goals on September 27
th’s game against the Knights.
