DULUTH, Minn. -- The first ever Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Baseball Tournament play-in game took place at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn. on Thursday evening as Martin Luther College and Northland College met with both teams fighting for the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. 

The Knights outlasted the LumberJacks 5-2 to advance to the four-team double elimination tournament and will meet the top seeded College of St. Scholastica at 1 p.m. on Friday.

ST. PAUL – The College of St. Scholastica and the city of Duluth, Minn. will host the 2013 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Baseball Tournament this weekend at Wade Stadium with the winner of the four-team double elimination tournament earning the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The tournament games will be the first college games played at the venue this year. 

Before the tournament officially gets underway on Friday morning, Martin Luther College and Northland College will meet in a play-in game Thursday evening at 6 p.m.  The winner of the one game play-in, which will be held at Wade Stadium, will be the tournament’s fourth seed while the loser will not earn a UMAC tournament berth.   

St. Scholastica enters the tournament as the top seed after compiling an undefeated conference record this season (14-0 UMAC) and winning the UMAC regular season title for the 17th consecutive season.  The Saints enter the tournament in search of their 16th consecutive UMAC baseball tournament trophy and third consecutive berth into the NCAA Tournament.   

Joining St. Scholastica in the four-team double elimination tournament field will be second-seeded Bethany Lutheran College (10-4 UMAC), the No. 3 seed Northwestern College (10-4 UMAC)  and the winner of Thursday’s play-in game as the fourth seed.

Friday’s first game featuring Bethany Lutheran and Northwestern will begin at 10 a.m. with St. Scholastica and the winner of Thursday’s game between Martin Luther and Northland scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The losers of the first two games will play at 4 p.m. and the winners of the first two will play at 7 p.m. The second elimination game will begin action on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 4 p.m. If a second championship game needs to be played it will take place at noon on Sunday.

Upon completion of the tournament championship game, one team will advance to the NCAA Tournament, which begins at eight regional sites May 15 -19 before Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis. hosts the finals May 24 – 28.
