Saints lead the way in UMAC Women's Tennis awards

ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its 2013 women’s tennis postseason awards on Tuesday with the College of St. Scholastica, the league’s regular season and tournament champion, claiming five all-conference awards.

Saints named to the list include Hillary Bungarden, who earned the honor for the third consecutive season, two-time All-UMAC selections Lexi Gunderson, Rachel Zwiener and Megan Lawrence and first-time selection Kelli Johnson.

Northwestern College, who finished second in both the regular season and UMAC Tournament, had four all-conference award winners including Megan Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Rachel Bostrom and Rachel Smith. Sophomore Megan Johnson was also named the 2013 UMAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year after going 8-2 in conference singles matches this season and 9-1 in doubles competition.

All four teams that made last weekend’s tournament were represented on the All-UMAC list as the University of Minnesota Morris had two selections while Bethany Lutheran College had one.

Saints Head Coach Wells Patten was voted the UMAC Coach of the Year after leading his team to an undefeated 10-0 UMAC record and earning the program’s 17th consecutive regular season and tournament titles.

Martin Luther College won the team sportsmanship award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches and presented to team that best represents sportsmanship throughout the entire season. Each team had one representative on the individual sportsmanship award list. The following participants best exemplified sportsmanship throughout the year:
