UMAC Women's Soccer Tournament Kicks Off Tuesday

ST. PAUL -- Four teams became two in the 2013 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament semifinals on Tuesday

The top-seeded College of St. Scholastica defeated fourth-seeded Northland College 4-0 to give the Saints a berth in Saturday’s tournament championship game on their home field. The Saints will face second-seeded University of Minnesota Morris who earned their berth in the championship by outscoring the No. 3 seed, Martin Luther College, 6-0.

The Saints and Cougars will meet for the third straight year in the tournament championship game on Saturday. Saturday's championship will either begin at 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. in Duluth depending on the outcome of the men’s soccer semifinal contests. The winner will earn the UMAC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

ST. PAUL – The four-team single elimination Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women’s Soccer Tournament will kick off Tuesday with two semi-final contests scheduled for 2 p.m.

The College of St. Scholastica will enter the tournament as the top seed after completing a perfect 14-0 UMAC record and will host fourth-seeded Northland College (5-7-2 UMAC) as the teams meet for the third time this season. The Saints, who claimed their 10th straight regular season title this year, are led by forward Kelsey Kehtel who leads the league in scoring this season with 28 goals. Kehtel and the Saints will face a strong Northland defense led by goal keeper Jessica Jaeckel who has had an impressive finish to the regular season and leads the league in save percentage (.828).

At the same time, the tournaments’ No. 2 seed, Minnesota Morris, will host Martin Luther College who enters the UMAC postseason in the No. 3 spot. The Cougars went 11-3 in UMAC play this season while the Knights compiled a 10-4 conference record. Emma LaChance has led the Cougars with 13 goals and 29 points on the season while Martin Luther’s Bethany Schultz and Jenna Maurer both rank in the top five the conference in goals and points.

Tuesday’s winners will advance to the UMAC Tournament championship game on Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The league’s automatic berth the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the 2013 UMAC Women’s Soccer Tournament Champion, who will learn about their first round opponent and destination on Monday.
