ST. PAUL – The 2013 UMAC Men’s Soccer Tournament gets underway on Tuesday as the University of Minnesota Morris will travel to the University of Northwestern for a 2 p.m. semifinal contest. The second semifinal game of the four-team single elimination tournament will take place in Duluth on Wednesday at 2 p.m. as the College of St. Scholastica hosts Bethany Lutheran College.
In Tuesday’s contest second-seeded Northwestern will host No. 3 Minnesota Morris as the two teams meet for the third time this season and the second time in just four days. The Eagles and the Cougars compiled identical 10-3-1 UMAC records this season with their first contests of the season ending with a 1-0 score in favor of Northwestern and the second meeting ending in a 1-1 tie.
St. Scholastica enters Wednesday’s contest as the top seed in the tournament after compiling a perfect 14-0 conference record and earning their fourth straight UMAC regular season trophy. The Saints host Bethany Lutheran who enters the UMAC postseason in the No. 4 spot. The Vikings finished UMAC regular season play with a 9-5 record and are led in scoring by Benjamin Molstad who ranks in the top five in the league in both goals and points this season. The quad of Andrew Jenkins, Joe Watt, Tom Corcoran and Sean Morgan has been dominant for the Saints this season with all four in the top five in the UMAC for points.
The semifinal winners will advance to the UMAC Tournament championship game on Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The league’s automatic berth the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the 2013 UMAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Champion, who will learn about their first round opponent and destination on Monday.
