Vikings earn first-ever trip to NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship

LAKE CITY, Minn. – Bethany Lutheran College again turned in the low team score on the third and final day of the 2013 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship to claim the program’s first-ever berth to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship and second UMAC men’s golf title. The Vikings, who owned a 28 stroke lead heading into Saturday, shot an 18-hole team score of 311 to finish the three-day event a commanding 40 strokes ahead of the next best team at Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minnesota.

Crown College was the second place team at the Championship posting a three day score of 982, just two strokes ahead of third place University of Northwestern. The Eagles recorded their best round of the tournament on Saturday finishing the day with a team score of 314. North Central University followed Northwestern by four strokes to finish fourth in the team standings. The University of Minnesota Morris, Martin Luther College and Northland College finished in fifth, sixth and seventh place respectively in the conference championship event.

In addition to winning the team trophy, Bethany Lutheran also earned individual medalist honors as Austin Snow was the individual champion after recording a final round of 74 to go along with rounds of 73 and 76 to finish with a three-day total of 223. Martin Luther’s Joshua Hanson followed Snow in the final leader board posting a three day, 54-hole score of 226.

The top eight individual finishers earned all-conference honors for their performance at the championship. A full listing of UMAC Men’s Golf post-season awards will be available at umacathletics.com on Monday.

With their championship, Bethany Lutheran secures the UMAC’s automatic qualifier to the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship May 13 – 16 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
