ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week is a feature that takes place each week throughout the conference portion of the season with one contest being selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.
The week's UMAC Game of the Week will take place on Saturday, October 5 as the currently undefeated College of St. Scholastica women's soccer team travels to take on Martin Luther College. The Knights are currently 3-1 in UMAC play and look to build on the strong start to the conference portion of the season this weekend. The game is scheduled for a 2:15 p.m. start time in New Ulm.
About the Saints
The Saints have been dominant in conference play thus far this season, out-scoring teams 26-0 and out-shooting them 147-3. CSS has allowed only one shot on-goal in conference action up this point. Head Coach Dave Reyelts enters the weekend just one win shy of his 200th career victory. Reyelts is in his 14th season as head coach for the Saints. Casey Mitchell has recorded one assist in six straight games and Shannon Carlson has registered at least one point in the last four games. Mitchell's six assists leads the conference. St. Scholastica leads the league in every statistical category with the exception of shot percentage, where it is second.
About the Knights
The Knights enter the weekend with a 3-1 conference record, the best start to a UMAC season for the program since 2005. They have done it with a strong mix of veterans and newcomers, as senior Bethany Schultz and freshman Jenna Maurer are currently tied for first in the conference with eight goals, and also rank first and second, respectively, in points. Those two will be needed, along with Alex Hastings, Lauren Maertz and the rest of the MLC attack, to counter the high-powered CSS offense.
Defensively, the Knights have been solid in conference play. Keely Keese has allowed 1.75 goals against in four conference games with a .731 save percentage. Seniors Melissa Mittelstadt and Alydia Lee have been strong on defense, while Casey Sauer has also given the Knights strong play from her defensive midfield spot and won UMAC Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the opening week of league play.
Game Notes
- St. Scholastica senior Logan Williamson was named the UMAC Defense Player of the Week on Tuesday after recording her first goal of the season against North Central on Friday.
- Martin Luther's Bethany Schultz is currently fourth in the MLC record books for career goals (33) and points (90). She has a chance to move ahead of Jenni Mueller (2003-06) into third place in career points this weekend with a strong showing. Mueller finished her career with 92 career points.
- MLC's Bethany Schultz and Jenna Maurer have scored goals in the same game five times this season. Both players have scored at least once in six of the team’s eight games.
- MLC ranks second in the UMAC in goals this season with 24. St. Scholastica is first in that category with 30.
- After not scoring a goal in the first four games of the season, MLC's Alex Hastings has scored three times since the start of conference play.
-The Saints have not lost to the Knights since the 2002 season. Since that loss the Saints are 20-0-1 against Martin Luther.
-Two of the last three meetings at Martin Luther have been decided by one goal.
