Day 2 Results
LAKE CITY, Minn. – The rain held off for Day 2 of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minnesota. Bethany Luther College once again turned in the top 18-hole team score posting a 311 building on their already solid lead from Day 1.
The Vikings’ Jon Pederson carded the low individual score of the day finishing with an 18-hole score of 72 and currently sits second in the individual standings. Pederson’s teammate Austin Snow scored a 76 on the day and leads the field of 35 in the individual standings with his two day 36-hole score of 149.
With improved weather conditions, all seven teams bettered their Day 1 scores on the second day of the tournament. The University of Minnesota Morris shaved 21 strokes off the previous day’s score finishing Day 2 with a 319 and a two day total score of 659. The Cougars were anchored by Kory Shelerud and Sam Gill who shot 75 and 76 respectively on Friday.
The Rams of North Central University saw the most significant team improvement on the day, finishing with a Day 2 team score of 318, 24 strokes ahead of yesterday’s mark and tied for third place with Crown College at 660 after two days of competition. Crown’s Juan Marcos Cueva turned in an 18-hole score of 77 for the second straight day and is currently the fourth individual golfer overall.
The University of Northwestern, who was in second place after the opening round, sits fifth in the team standings with a two day team score of 670. Just eleven strokes separate the second through fifth place teams heading into the third and final day of the Championship.
Martin Luther College freshmen Josh Hansen led the way for the Knights again on Friday entering the clubhouse with a 77 and in third place overall scorecard reading 76-77. Hanson’s team owns a two day score of 685, good for sixth in the team standings. Rounding out the field is Northland College, who improved their 18-hole team score by 16 strokes on Friday.
The final day of the UMAC Championship will start at 11 a.m. with the first of twelve tee times. The tops eight individual finishers will receive all-conference recognition at the conclusion of tomorrow’s final round with the top team securing the UMAC’s automatic qualifier to the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship at May 13 – 16 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
