LAKE CITY, Minn. – Battling on and off rain throughout the first day of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men’s Golf Championship, Bethany Lutheran College emerged as the top team of the day in the tournament’s seven team field at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn.
The Vikings trailed Crown College by four strokes at the turn but pulled away from the Storm and the rest of the field on the back nine to finish the day a comfortable 16 strokes head of the next the next best team. Bethany Lutheran was lead by Austin Snow who turned in the top individual mark of the day with an 18-hole score of 73, on the Par 71, 6,512-yard course. Snow’s teammate Jon Pederson carded a 78 on the day which land him in fourth place individually after the first day of competition.
The University of Northwestern finished second in the team standings behind the consistent play of the Luke Pederson and Eric Robinson, who finished fifth and sixth in the individual standings after shooting a 79 and 80 on the day respectively.
Following Bethany Lutheran and Northwestern in the team standings was Crown College, who finished its first day of competition with a score of 338, just two strokes behind the Eagles. Crown’s top performance of the day came from Juan Marcos Cueva who finished Day 1 with three birdies, carding a 77. Minnesota Morris’ score of 340 slotted the Cougars fourth place while North Central will enter Day 2 in fifth place after turning in a score of 342, leaving four teams within just six-strokes of one another heading in into the second day of the tournament.
Martin Luther’s Josh Hansen finished Day 1 in second place individually after shooting Par on 12 holes and posting a score of 76. Hansen’s team will enter Day 2 in sixth place, just nine strokes behind the Rams. Northland College rounded out Thursday’s field finishing the day with team score of 376.
All seven teams will be back in action on Friday, with tee times slated to begin at 11 a.m. and weather forecasts predicting precipitation for the majority of the day once again.
