ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its 2012 women’s tennis postseason awards on Thursday with the College of St. Scholastica, the league’s regular season and tournament champion, claiming the most awards. The Saints had five all-conference winners while boasting the UMAC Player of the Year.

St. Scholastica sophomore Hillary Bungarden headlined the UMAC All-Conference list after going 8-1 in league singles matches this spring to earn the title of player of the year. Other Saints to make the all-conference squad include Lexi Gunderson, Megan Lawrence, Cortne Solberg and Rachael Zwiener.

Northwestern College, who finished second in both the regular season and UMAC Tournament, had four all-conference award winners including senior Amy Knight, who went a combined 8-1 in singles play, splitting time between the Nos. 3 and 4 positions. All four teams that made last weekend’s tournament were represented on the All-UMAC list as the University of Minnesota Morris had two selections while Martin Luther College had one.

Cougars Head Coach Elijah Starzl was voted the UMAC Coach of the Year following Minnesota Morris’ 6-4 league season after going 4-6 in 2011. Morris also won the team sportsmanship award, an accolade that is selected by the UMAC coaches to best represent sportsmanship throughout the entire season. Each team had one representative on the individual sportsmanship award list. The following participants best exemplified sportsmanship throughout the year:

Rebecca Kopacek, Bethany Lutheran College
Jill Kammerer, College of St. Scholastica
