Northwestern President Dr. Alan Cureton appointed to NCAA Division III President's Council

ST. PAUL – Northwestern College President Dr. Alan Cureton has been appointed to fill an immediate vacancy on the NCAA Division III President’s Council, the highest ranking group in the NCAA Division III Governance Structure. 

The appointment marks the first time an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) President has been named a member of the of the NCAA Division III President’s Council. 

The Council meets in person on a quarterly basis and has ultimate authority for creating, modifying and implementing policies as well as oversight of allocation of the annual budget.

Dr. Cureton, who has been President of Northwestern College since 2002 also serves as the chair of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Council of Presidents, is a member of the NCAA Division III Nominating Committee and has been a member of the NCAA Division III Chancellors/Presidents Advisory Group since 2010.

In addition to having over 30 years of experience in high education, Dr. Cureton holds a bachelor's degree in Bible and Christian education from Sterling College (Kansas). He earned a Ph.D., in history and philosophy of education and also in higher education, from Iowa State University. In 2007, he received the Alumni Achievement Award from Iowa State University, recognizing his meritorious service and distinguished achievements in higher education.

During his collegiate undergraduate career, Dr. Cureton competed on the gridiron earning all-conference recognition his senior year. He is especially proud of having started and played in every football game throughout his four-year collegiate career.

His term on the President’s Council will expire at the end of the 2014 Convention, but Cureton will be eligible for re-appointment to a four-year term at that time.
