UMAC Champion St. Scholastica leads softball all-conference awards
ST. PAUL – Eight players from the College of St. Scholastica softball team were named to the 2010 UMAC All-Conference Awards listing, which was released on Monday. The Saints, who won their second consecutive conference championship this season, led all institutions, adding four players to the all-defensive team. St. Scholastica’s Jen Falk, Bonnie Kowalczyk, Erika Solin, Kristin Swartz and Merryssa Tiedeman all earned spots on the all-conference first team.
Northwestern College followed with four UMAC All-Conference First Team selections while Northland College had three individual accolades on the first team. The University of Minnesota, Morris had two representatives on the list, followed by Bethany Lutheran College and Presentation College, who each boasted one student-athlete in the announcement.
St. Scholastica’s Merryssa Tiedeman was named the UMAC Player of the Year after leading the conference in individual batting, posting a .621 average with 36 hits and 25 RBI in 19 league games. 14 of the sophomore outfielder’s hits were doubles to go with four triples and a pair of home runs. Tiedeman’s coach, Jen Walter, was elected the 2010 UMAC Coach of the Year by her colleagues. As a team, St. Scholastica led the league in batting, fielding and pitching.
