Bethany Lutheran senior guard Lindsey Kahle, who entered the Vikings’ game Saturday against St. Scholastica with 996 career points, became just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 in a 61-60 loss to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference foe at the BLC Sports and Fitness Center.
“I wasn’t really that nervous,” she said, “I just wanted to get it over with so we could just play. Today was the only day I really felt pressure. I just try to play my game. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.”
Kahle reached the mile-stone with a mid-range jumper that hit nothing but net with 17:05 left in the game in front of a crowd of 242 people. “My family was here, so I’m really glad I got it here as opposed to the road,” Kahle said.
“It’s kind of a big deal and a big accomplishment,” head coach Tiffany Young Klockziem said. “She dealt with it and handled the pressure very well. She had some very good passes and was very unselfish. To have two (players score 1,000 career points) in one year is pretty special.”
Kahle finished with nine points and four assists. Eva Voss also went over 1,000 points earlier in the season.
Bethany led 37-27 at the half, holding St. Scholastica to just 29 percent shooting from the field. Voss had 11 points and nine rebounds at the break, including a three-possession stretch where she scored seven points and made 5 of 5 free throws to give the Vikings and 11-5 lead and some offensive momentum.
“Eva is definitely a team leader,” said Young Klockziem, “We kind of expect her to play that way and she usually does. She is very dependable.”
The second half was a different story for Bethany. The Saints shot 54 percent from the floor, while the Vikings made just nine field goals and committed 13 turnovers. St. Scholastica finished the game with a 34-19 run.
Bethany led 60-56 before Alexa Leighton banked in a 3-pointer with 58.7 seconds remaining.
After a Bethany miss, Katie Christensen’s layup gave the Saints a 61-60 lead with nine seconds to play. Casey Gudahl’s last-second 3-pointer fell short to give the resilient Saints the win. They are very well-coached,” Young Klockziem said, “They are definitely fighters and are very athletic.”
Voss led Bethany with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Gudahl had 11 points and five assists.
Molly Erdman also scored 11 for the Vikings. Bethany’s Caitlin Meyer had nine rebounds and a team-high four steals. Teammate Anna Cepek scored six points and pulled down six rebounds.
As a team, the Vikings out-rebounded St. Scholastica 51-35. Bethany shot 16 of 19 from the free-throw line, but committed 22 total turnovers.
Samantha Oraskovich led the Saints with 13 points and six rebounds.
