MANKATO, Minn. (Jan. 22, 2009) — Bethany Lutheran College today named Mike Walters as its Head
Volleyball Coach, replacing Susan Wilde who resigned this fall.

“I am excited for this opportunity to coach volleyball at Bethany Lutheran College. I look forward to helping Bethany continue to be successful in athletics. With the returning players and the incoming freshmen, we will have a strong team to compete in the UMAC conference again this year,” Walters said.

An assistant with Bethany last season, Walters has been coaching volleyball since 1993. He began coaching at the Junior Olympic level at White Bear Lake High School, where he led his team to nationals in his final year. Walters continued working in high school volleyball at Hudson High School in Hudson, Wis., as the head volleyball coach before returning to his Minnesota roots. The Good Thunder, Minn., native served as the head coach at St. Clair High School for two years, leading his team to the conference tournament both seasons. During his time at St. Clair, Walters was instrumental in
starting a Junior Olympic and Summer League programs. Beyond serving as Wilde’s assistant last year at Bethany, Walters served as a certified volleyball official for various Mankato volleyball leagues.

“In naming Mike Walters as our new head volleyball coach we ensure a continued line of success within the volleyball program, said Karl Fager, Bethany’s athletic director.“Mike has a great volleyball background and is well respected by the young ladies on the team. I know he will hit the ground running to solidify the recruits that have been waiting to see who our new head coach was going to be. I am very pleased and excited to have Mike move into the head coaching position.”
